SA2's port is much better (it runs at 16:9, but some cutscenes are still in 4:3 and audio balancing is screwy), but like SA1 which had the new content from DX sold as DLC, the content introduced in SA2B on GameCube is similarly sold as DLC. Unless you want more content, skip the DX upgrade DLC, though, since all it adds is Mission Mode (which is fairly lackluster) and Metal Sonic as a playable character (read: a skin for Sonic) for getting all 130 emblems.
While I won't say it's "literally unplayable" like some people (I first played SA1 through the PS3 version, which is identical to the Xbox 360 version, and I enjoyed it fine enough), it does have some quirks and it lacks the Game Gear games from the GameCube/2004 PC release.
SA1 on Xbox 360 is the DX version and runs in 4:3.
